Title contenders Jordy Smith and Kelly Slater were the high-profile victims, falling to Ryan Callinan and Leonardo Fioravanti, respectively. Matt Wilkinson was confronted with a huge threat as well, in French surfer Joan Duru, who pushed Wilko to the very end. But the Austraian, who's ranked World No. 3, cut loose when it counted and the extra aggression saw him through.
