With just over a minute left, Ian Gouveia went for a Hail Mary of an air to take the win from Tanner Gudauskas and move on to the Semifinals at the Billabong Pro Cascais. Both surfers had a lot on the line in Portgual: The Californian arrived at No. 31 on the Qualifying Series, heavy in the hunt for a spot the 2017 Championship Tour. Gouveia, meanwhile, was at No. 9, just inside the cutoff, but jumped to a safer spot following his gutsy performances in Portgual.
