Day one of the Subway Pro Junior at Victoria's Phillip Island delivered some huge performances with Australasia's top U/18 surfers doing battle at the notorious Cape Woolamai ocean beach.
The opening two rounds of both the men's and women's Pro Junior divisions took to the water, with bowling left and right hand breaking waves moving through a strong rip bank.
Fourteen year old Tane Bowden also starred in the opening round of the men, surfing with experience beyond his years.
"The surf was definitely challenging, I managed to find some solid scores under priority and built my confidence and scores from there. It's good to be back in my adopted home of Victoria, I've been interstate for quite a while following the Subway Pro Junior events. I love Woolamai and the chill vibes of the Phillip Island area. I'm super stoked to be making heats at this event".
New Zealand's Kehu Butler delivered a dominant performance in his opening heat, taking to the morning's favorable high tide with a strong polished performance.
"I've never been to Phillip Island before, it's such a rad place" said Butler. I love surfing powerful rip bowls, so it was great to surf with three other guys with the four man priority system. These Subway events are epic, its sweet to have a really strong series in Australia".
Butler's two wave total of 13.90 (out of a possible 20) featured a 7 point ride, with the strong natural footer unloading a series of power based maneuvers.
The dropping tide saw two rounds of Women's hit the water, with Macy Callahan (North Shelley Beach, NSW) sending a warning shot to women's field.
Fresh from an =17th result at the QS 6000 Aussie Bodies Women's at Sydney's Manly beach yesterday, Callaghan showed no signs of fatigue in securing the highest two wave total of the women's rounds.
"I lost a really close heat yesterday afternoon in Manly, so we packed up the car and drove through the night to get to this event"
"The water was a bit colder than Sydney, but it's great to be at Phillip Island and I'm really looking forward to a good nights sleep and more great waves tomorrow".
