The far north coast region of NSW can look forward to a new Australasian World Surf League Qualifying Series (QS) 1000 event when the Telstra Stores Tweed Coast Pro lands in Cabarita in February 2016.
The elite three-day competition - which will form the second of four stops on the recently announced NSW Pro Surf Series - will take place from 1 - 3 February, 2016.
144 of Australia's and the world's most promising male and female surfers will compete in the event.
Surfing NSW CEO Mark Windon is thrilled to see professional surfing heading to NSW's northern tip.
"Surfing NSW were fortunate enough to host our Open State Title event in the Tweed region, early in 2015 and can validate how fun the waves can be," Windon said. "There is an extremely deep talent pool in the area and we can't wait to see some of Australia's best take them on, when the Tweed Coast Pro kicks off in February."
Event partner Destination Tweed shares similar sentiments and looks forward to building the high caliber event over the next few years.
"We're over the moon to see this event in the Tweed region," said Bill Tatchell, Chief Executive Officer of Destination Tweed. "Over the next few years we look forward to strengthening our relationship with Surfing NSW with events such as this and welcome all visitors to experience all that the region has to offer."
"WSL can't wait for the inaugural Tweed Coast Pro, the second stop on the NSW Pro Surf Series," said Will Hayden-Smith WSL Australasia Tour Manager. "This event will offer opportunities and experience for surfers from near and far to compete at a professional level. The Tweed Coast is home to plenty of great waves and so many talented surfers so I'm sure it's got all the right ingredients for an exciting event."
The NSW Pro Surf Series was developed for Australian and international surfers to gain ranking points and prize money on the WSL Qualifying Series. The Series also creates a NSW coastal road trip for all to explore the variety of waves, visit local communities and enjoy NSW surfing culture.
The 2016 NSW Pro Surf Series is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
