Mick Fanning of Tweed Heads, NSW, Australia (pictured) has won the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach defeating 11X ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) in the final on Friday April 6, 2012. Fanning edged out Slater by the narrowest of margins, his pair of 9.10 and 9.70 rides topping Slaters near perfect 10 and back up 8.07 ride. Fannings win marked Fannings 14th elite tour win and his first Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach win since 2001. It also brings the Australians record with Slater closer to even at 7 to Kellys 8 in their heat matchup history. ASP/Kirstin

11xASP World Champion Kelly Slater of the United States of America (pictured) has finished runner-up at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, clinching the ASP World No. 1 position after just two events on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour. Slater fought back from an early combination situation against Fanning in Fridays final, completing an incredible full-rotation aerial for a Perfect 10. The legendary natural-footer backed it up moments later with an 8.07 to take the lead, but would only hold it briefly after an assault from Fanning left in second place finishing on 18.07 (out of 20.00) to Fannings 18.80. Im so pumped, Fanning said. Kelly (Slater) did that Hail Mary for the 10 and I thought, oh, here we go. I just caught waves and Im stoked it all paid off. Im really at a loss for words and Im just pumped. It doesnt get any sweeter. The crowds been amazing with the whole amphitheater and the history that comes with it. I always picture this event and have had some seconds over the years, so to get this one, Im so pumped. ASP/Kirstin

Kelly Slater of the United States of America took an amazing round three heat win over local surfer Nic Muscroft (AUS) at the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach on Thursday April 5, 2012. The 11 X ASP World Champion, who snapped his surfboard mid heat and had to change boards, was losing the heat until the final eight seconds when. Still needing an excellent 8.5 plus score to win, Slater rode his final wave, completing a high degree difficulty aerial manuever to score a 9.23, stealing the win from Muscroft. Final scores Slater 17.00 to Muscroft on 16.30. ASP/Kirstin
