Hawaiian John John Florence and South African Jordy Smith face off in a young guns Final at Lower Trestles.
Jordy Smith (ZAF) broke the Gabriel Medina-Michel Bourez-Mick Fanning monopoly on title wins when he topped the podium of the 2014 Hurley Pro at Trestles. In his best result this season -- before coming to Lowers he had yet to make the Semifinals in any event -- Smith powered through the event, notching a nine-point ride in the Final to defeat John John Florence.
The true magic behind Smith's winning board is that it was brand new. Most surfers have their go-to board for contest days. A broken-in stick offers a sense of comfort and confidence that they can achieve their best result. But the South African's 'Girabbit' model from Channel Islands was hot off the press.
"I had a copy of that board that I'd been surfing on all week and then I broke it in the free surf before competition," Smith said. "I'm still baffled on how I did as I was riding a wave in. The boys at CI (Channel Islands) worked some magic and got a replacement board made in 24 hours. I rode it for the first time in my Round 4 heat and I knew it was magic as soon as I stood up on it."

SHAPER: Channel Islands Surfboards
MODEL: Girabbit
DIMENSIONS: 6'1" x 19.25" x 2.56"
FINS: AM2 Futres tri-fin
TAIL: Squash
MATERIALS: Standard construction (Polyurethane foam and resin)
VOLUME: 31.8L
"It's one of Jordy's signature models that he's been working on throughout the year," said CI team manager Travis Lee. "We had some pretty good success in the opening rounds of Jeffreys Bay and the board is designed to be a performer when the surf has some push. The single concave works well with Jordy's rail game and the Girabbit has a bit of flip in the tail to allow for tight pivots when necessary."
Next stop on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour is the Quiksilver Pro France, which runs from September 25 through October 6.
