Dylan Lightfoot has won the JBU Supertrial, presented by RVCA, earning himself a spot on the World Championship Tour (WCT) Top 34 for the 2014 J-Bay Open.
Lightfoot, a Jeffreys Bay local who surfs Supertubes regularly, won a tight final against Cape Town surfer Michael February -- to the delight of crowds packing the beach and boardwalks. Durban surfer Slade Prestwich and J-Bay local, Matt McGillivray, finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
“I am so stoked; this is a dream come true,†said Lightfoot after the event. “I have wanted to surf in the World Championship Tour event in Jeffreys Bay since I was a kid and winning the JBU Supertrial has given me that opportunity.â€
Supertubes delivered the goods, with consistent four-to-six foot waves from beginning to end. Warren Dean claimed Barrel Of The Day in the opening heats, winning a Firewire surfboard for his efforts. But Warren wasn't the only one who took home shiny new gear. Prestwich won an Arbor Skateboard for best carve, and Lightfoot scored a Capital Automatic watch from Nixon, valued at R10,000, for his wildcard victory.
“We are proud to be involved with the JBU Supertrial and it's great that a local surfer has won the wildcard into the WCT event to be held in July at Supertubes,†said Arno Lane, from event sponsor RVCA.
The JBU Supertrial was sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and organized by the JBU Surf Club, who are also organizing the upcoming J-Bay Open. The ASP WCT event will see the top surfers in the world descend upon Jeffreys Bay in their quest to be crowned champion.
The 2014 ASP J-Bay Open will be at Jeffreys Bay with a waiting period from July 10 – 20. Click here for more information on the J-Bay Open World Tour event.
