Born and bred Newcastle local, Mark Richards envisioned the twin fin in 1976. From 1979 to 1981, the twin fin took Mark's surfing to new heights. And he went on to win four World Championships Titles. Now, the Mark Richards twin fin can be found at beaches around the world.
In the 36 year history of professional surfing at Newcastle there has never been a local winner of the men's event.
It may not have the same reputation as Margaret River and Bells Beach, but Merewether can certainly hold its own.
