Legendary war photographer Robert Capa said it best. "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough." The same can often be said about surf photography.
From Don James documenting SanO with a drugstore camera in the 1930s, to Ron Stoner capturing Mexico's points in the 1960s, to George Greenough rebuilding motion picture cameras into water tight tanks -- the water shot has been pivotal in capturing the essence of surfing for nearly a hundred years.
Now with the advent of jet skis, greater boat access, and modern wetsuits and cameras, we can truly see the decisive moment captured from the surface of the water.
A recent example of this is Laurent Pujol's dynamic water shots of Grant "Twiggy" Baker from the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge in February. Pujol captured the big wave legend careening down 60-foot faces at Portugal's infamous big wave break.
So many moments from this wave have been captured either by drone or by cameras way atop the cliff. But seeing big Nazaré from the surface of the water is a truly unique angle that puts butterflies in your stomach.
