Strong Southerly winds wreak havoc in the Ballito lineup for the fourth consecutive day of action at the Ballito Pro pres by O'Neill. It's moving day with the last round of four-surfer heats before points start to get serious in Round 4.
Hawaii's Barron Mamiya is no stranger to strong side shore winds and when the opportunity came, he launched right into a clean, backhand full-rotation, landing perfectly into the flats and nailed the event's highest single score of 9.17 (at the time) for the move.
Barron Mamiya goes to the air and scores a near-perfect 9.17 in Round 3 of the Ballito Pro.
"Back home we have similar trade winds and when it picks up super gnarly it looks exactly like this," he said. "There's a wave in front of my house called Log Cabins and I surf there all the time with huge ramps so I've always loved doing airs."
Of course that's not the first time we're stunned by his aerial prowess, take a look at this insane attempt a little over a year ago.
But in the context of a heat, especially a QS10,000 heat, when he's actively trying to qualify and making good progress, it takes true grit to just go for it, let alone stamp it perfectly.
"I knew if I had one section out there I'd go for it," he continued. "I practiced those so much, I have 100% confidence when I hit that section and I know I'm landing it. I'm definitely going out there chasing those air sections if I have to surf again later today."
