Updated Monday, April 2nd
EVENT WINDOW: April 4th-8th
Brief Overview:
Expect good surf for almost the entire contest period, with larger, more ragged swell on Wednesday, dropping and cleaning up through Thursday. The surf then continues small to medium, with a possible second pulse of more solid swell on Saturday. Expect fairly good wind conditions throughout.
Synopsis:
A strong westerly fetch just north of the Azores on the southern flank of a complex area of low pressure is pushing a large pulse of westerly swell into Biscay, due to arrive on Wednesday. Another system will follow in its tracks, expected to deepen about 800 miles northwest of the Azores by Thursday, generating a second pulse of swell, although this may struggle to reach Zarautz.
A strong low North of the Azores will send plenty of swell to the bay of Biscay initially. - WSL / magicseaweed.com
Outlook:
On Wednesday expect some largish, long-period swell with wave heights exceeding six feet particularly during the afternoon. The swell is very west, so expect smaller wave heights at Zarautz than on adjacent west-facing coasts. Wind conditions are cross-offshore from the SSW switching to cross-onshore later.
Thursday sees a steady drop in swell during the day, with a slightly more NW orientation. Wave heights drop to around four feet or so by late afternoon. Wind conditions are quite good all day, with light to moderate easterlies, but NE breezes could produce some bumpiness during the afternoon.
On Friday wave heights drop another notch and then remain steady, around the three-foot range, with very good wind conditions in light southerlies gusting moderate or fresh.
The latest forecast for the weekend shows conditions remaining good with moderate to fresh southerlies at first dropping to light westerlies later, and consistent small to medium swell. A more solid pulse of west swell might arrive on Saturday, but this depends on the trajectory of that second low pressure system.
