Australian and international elite junior surfers will converge on the Sunshine Coast this weekend for event six of the Subway® Surf Series, part of the World Surf League (WSL) Australia/Oceania Junior Qualifying Series (JQS). All eyes will be on the event as excitement builds, 2017 being the first time in years that a WSL sanctioned event is being held on the Sunshine Coast.
The Subway® Surf Series is now in its third year, continuing to propel the world's best young surfers into the future of competition with full support from Surfing Australia and the WSL.
The series is so significant for break through junior surfers as it forms part of the 2017 WSL Australasian Junior Qualifying Series (JQS), providing winning athletes with an opportunity to compete for a much coveted world title at the WSL Junior Championships in 2018. Queensland's own 2016 Junior World Champion and 2017 WSL World Tour competitor Ethan Ewing competed in the series in 2016 and is now rubbing shoulders with the the likes of Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater and John John Florence.
"The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's surfing meccas and has been screaming for an event of this calibre for many years. Everyone involved are thrilled to see the event take place in this location in 2017." Said Dev Lahey, Events Manager at Surfing Queensland.
"This event series is highly important for the development of Queensland's top tier junior athletes, some of which will get their first taste of international competition this weekend."
WSL World Tour competitors Laura Enever and Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, Queensland) are ambassadors for the series in 2017 and will be attending events and mentoring junior surfers throughout the year to continue their support.
That talent includes competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, Peru and Chile including current Under 18 Australian Boy's champion Jack Thomas and Under 18 Australia Girl's champion India Robinson.
Tweed Coast local Alyssa Lock will compete in this weekend's event and has been in fine form so far in 2017, winning the wild card spot in the 2017 Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks and taking out the recent Subway® Surf Series Pro Junior event in Trigg, Western Australia in March. Lock will look to continue her dream run this weekend in order to secure her spot in the World Juniors in 2018.
"My goal is definitely to qualify for the World Juniors next year (2018), so this result puts me in a good position for it." Said Lock, after a second place finish at the most recent Subway® Surf Series Pro Junior in Kiama, New South Wales this month.
