15-year-old Wyatt McHale scored the top score of the main event, an 8.50 for a Backdoor sandbar drainer, while Tyler Newton nabbed a 9.0 ride during the 8-man Volcom Last Chance Qualifier surf-off heat. McHale and Newton both advanced into Round 2, where they will face off with some of Pipe's heaviest hitters.
