The World Surf League (WSL) Australasia Qualifying Series will tomorrow return to one of the world's most iconic waves at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast for the opening day of the Burleigh Pro presented by Bruce Lynton Land Rover.
144 of the best surfers on the globe will descend on Burleigh for the QS1,000 event, all vying for important qualifying points on their quest to for a spot on the Championship Tour (CT).
Former CT surfer and last year's Burleigh Pro Winner, Mitch Crews (AUS) will be looking to back up his 2015 win with another victory in 2016.
"I'm thrilled to get the chance to compete in the contest," Crews said. "Having a win here last year definitely gives me confidence coming into this year's event, but it's never easy, there are so many guys in the event that could win so we'll just have to wait and see. The forecast is looking pretty fun and I can't wait to surf Burleigh with a handful of guys out".
The winner of the 2015 women's event was Dimity Stoyle (AUS) who also competed on the CT and is enjoying the prospect of competing in her home state at the beautiful waves of Burleigh Point.
"I'm really excited for this event, Burleigh is such a fun wave, "Stoyle said. "It look's as if there should be some good waves as well which is really sick. Hopefully I can have the same success as last year. It should be a great start to the year, it's nice that it's in Queensland and not far from home (Sunshine Coast)."
Stoyle, who fell off the CT at the end of last year is looking to put in a solid campaign on the QS this year with the aim of jumping back onto the ‘Dream Tour' in 2017.
"I'm planning on doing as many QS events as possible this year and getting back on the CT next year, so I'm pumped to get my campaign off to a strong star at Burleigh"
The Burleigh Pro presented by Bruce Lynton Range Rover will get underway tomorrow, January 29 - 31 at 7:30am AEST.
