Battles to ring the prestigious bell this year were intense and saw titans fall along the way. Among the men, 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) was taken down by reigning World Champ Gabriel Medina (BRA) in Round 5. Medina's glory didn't last long: In very next round, he was defeated by fellow Brazilian Adriano de Souza. De Souza went on to face Mick Fanning (AUS) in the Final, where they were tied at 15.27 points when the final horn sounded.

Heavy matchups unfolded for the women, too. Four of the top surfers on the Championship Tour (CT) battled hard in the Semis, but the Final was left to two of the CT's winningest women: six-time, reigning World Champ Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and two-time Champion
Carissa Moore (HAW). Not only was Moore the defending event winner, but she was coming off a win on the Gold Coast that proved to set a winning streak in motion.
