The cheering is over. The crowds have gone home. And contest winners Carissa Moore (HAW) and Filipe Toledo (BRA) have their eyes on the next event of the season. But the music from the 2015 Roxy Pro Gold Gold Coast and Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast plays on, with the songs that were a part of WSL's broadcast backdrop.
The Griswolds - If You Wanna Stay
Elite surfing and pioneering style at its finest on Day 14 of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
Sydney-based band The Griswolds got their start when Christopher Whitehall (vocals/guitar) challenged "sometimes-drinking buddy" Daniel Duque-Perez (guitar/synth) to write a riff on the spot. Liking the sound of it, they realized that they had more in common than just beer. They added bassist Tim John and drummer Lachlan West to the mix and got going with more songs. And while it wasn't a straight line to success (a failed songwriting retreat in the backwoods of Sydney got them wondering if they were totally misguided), they finally found their way to a winning debut album, Be Impressive, with some fun-filled tracks. Says Whitehall: "We're all about melodies, big hooks, choruses you want to singalong to and having lots of fun. That's what this band, and this album, is all about."
The Jungle Giants - Skin to Bone
First eliminations are doled out at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
The Jungle Giants' four members -- Sam Hales on Vocals/Guitar, Cesira Aitken on Lead Guitar, Andrew Dooris on Bass Guitar/Backing Vocals and Keelan Bijker on Drums/Trombone -- met in high school in Brisbane, Australia, but didn't become a quartet until years after. They released their first EP in 2011, and their first full-length album, Learn to Exist, two years later. Since then, they've been on a roll: Learn to Exist was featured on Australian radio station triple j, and have appeared at festivals like Big Day Out alongside major acts like Arcade Fire and Pearl Jam. Fans can catch them next in Perth, Australia, later in March 2015 and in Asia in April.
Strange Talk - Climbing Walls (Viceroy Remix)
Round 3 and 4 of the women's elite competition saw huge maneuvers, nail-biters and upsets.
Melbourne, Australia's electro-pop quartet Strange Talk brought the danceable beats to the Gold Coast with their track, "Climbing Walls (Viceroy Remix)." The group's founding members, Gerard Sidhu (bass/keys) and Stephen Docker (vocals/keys), met on MySpace several years ago, with modest musical dreams in mind. Now, two more bandmates -- Travis Constable (drums) and Gillan Gregory (guitar/keys) -- one critically acclaimed EP and one debut full-length later, they're on their way to becoming a titan on the electronic scene. Their album, Cast Away has added production oopmh from Tony Hoffer, who has lent his mixing skills to acts from M83 to Beck. "It was a long journey, making this record," Docker says on his website. "It's odd: you've got a classically trained violinist, a dance producer with a DJ background, and two funk/soul musicians. It's weird how it all gels together, but that's the unique flavor of Strange Talk."
